World Letter Writing Day at Maplewood
The story
1 September 2026
On World Letter Writing Day, marked on 1 September each year, Maplewood celebrated the simple power of a handwritten letter: a child slowing down, picking up a pen and writing from the heart.

- World Letter Writing Day
Four letters worth writing
We marked the day with four letter cards, each inviting a student to write to someone who matters:
- A letter to my future self: today’s words, tomorrow’s dreams.
- A letter to my parents: for your love, support and encouragement every day.
- A letter to my teacher: thank you for inspiring me to believe in myself.
- Dear Maplewood: thank you for a place where I learn, grow and belong.
Why a handwritten letter still matters
In a world of quick messages and busy screens, a letter asks a child to slow down. Choosing the words, shaping each sentence and thinking about the person who will read it builds self-expression, gratitude, imagination and the confidence to put feelings into words.
A letter is also something to keep. One day these little letters may become reminders of just how far our students have come.
Try it at home
Letter writing is easy to carry on at home. Ask your child to write a few lines to a grandparent, a friend or a teacher, or to seal a letter to their future self and open it at the end of the school year. Written today, remembered tomorrow.
